67F, 93%.  7:38 AP.  Couple days of non-running again...sheez.  Danielle and the kids were in town this weekend though and we had a great visit.  Saw the new house, went to the Alamo, Riverwalk, Sea World, etc.  Really bribed the kids into thinking they want to move here!  They left this morning and I won't see them until the end of the month, unfortunately.  Sounds like I'm divorced or something.  This month can not go by fast enough, we're ready to be moved already...

Anyway, tried to take advantage of the unseasonably cooler weather and pick up the pace toward the end.  I'll log 3 "fast" miles because they felt like aerobic threshold.  The actual paces were a lot slower (7:00, 7:01, 6:49) but hey, gotta work with what ya got.  One day I'll become a runner again.

74F, 95%.  Got in 10 this morning which I guess is my new long run.  I tried to pick it up for the last 3 but motivation was lacking.  I guess I didn't really try.  But I tried to try.

Headed to Barstow, CA for work today for a couple weeks.  Actually, for being in the middle of the Mojave desert, their mornings are somewhat cool (they're in the "high desert.")  I don't know what kind of running I'll be able to fit in though, hopefully something.

68F, 34%!  First run in Barstow - such a nice cool, dry morning.  Hard to believe it'll be 102 degrees later.

70F, 27%.  Low humidity is awesome.  6 easy miles.  I saw a little mountain that I can get to through an unused RV park out in the middle of nowhere.  It has ATV tracks going up so it should be pretty runnable.  Think I will run up there and give it a shot tomorrow.

71F, 30%. Pretty good run. I got up early and ran down to the "off-highway parking area." I actually did see 1 RV parked there today. It was about 3 miles to get there via road, then I hit the desert. Fortunately it wasn't all soft sand. Once I got to the mountain I wanted to climb, it was a little rockier. I tried to run it all but there were parts where it just seemed faster to hike, so I did. Never had to use my hands, it wasn't that steep. Got to the top after about a half mile and stopped to enjoy the view for 2-3 minutes...and catch my breath. I saw a much higher mountain a couple miles away on the backside of this one, but couldn't see any trails going up....not like you really need them here, there are no trees or much vegetation to be seen. Then back down - had to take it slow in some spots. It wasn't much of a mountain but it was fun. I looked at a topo chart and the one I climbed is only 2900' at the top; for reference, my hotel is at 2400. The other hill I saw to the south is 3500' so I'll give that one a shot later. I'm sure if I drive around I could find much higher mountains but I prefer to just see what I can get to from the hotel.

On the way back I actually picked it up for the last 3 miles - 6:31 downhill, 6:35 flat, 6:52 uphill. Not too bad for the shape I'm in.

66F, 23%.  Another beautiful morning in the Mojave.  This place isn't too bad for running (as long as you don't like running in the afternoons), I could get used to this.  Kept it short and easy today, planning another desert mountain adventure tomorrow morning.

61F, 39%.  I ran out of time and didn't make it to the peak of the mountain I had my eye on, had to turn back so I wouldn't be late for work.  It was pretty slow going this time after about a mile of desert floor.  Only 4-4.5 of the miles were road this time, lots of climbing and stuff.  Really fun run though, and I think I know a better avenue of approach for next time, so hopefully I will get a slow day next week where I can give it a shot.

Finished up with a couple 6:40's on the road on the way back.

62F, 40%.  6 easy, still in Barstow.  Schedule has not been conducive to running.  I'll be more than happy to leave on Saturday...

62F, 35%.  I finally got a bit of a reprieve from showing up at Ft Irwin so early all the time and had the time to do my mountain run.  I looked on a topo chart and went to the highest mountain that was within running distance from my hotel.  It was about 6 miles away, mostly desert running, with a couple miles of road to get there.

Here it is from close up, taken from a little hill.

Once I got to the base, it was less of a run, and more of a hike/climb.  Closer to the top, I had to put down my Gatorade bottle (sorry nature) because I needed my hands.  Here's the picture from the top:

Way off in the distance you can see some buildings - that's where my hotel is.  My 2007 phone camera has terrible resolution, sorry.

For the climb down I went a different way and it was a bit more steep than I bargained for, but didn't take too long.  It's no Mt Everest -- only about 1100' higher than my hotel's elevation -- but definitely out of my normal running routine.  I did a couple of 6:40's on the 2-mile stretch of road back to the hotel.  I can tell I'm going to be a bit sore too.  The hiking/climbing part had me breathing harder than the running part.

67F, 29%.  7:30 AP.  Last run in Barstow, I fly back to SA today.  Probably the last time I'll see my AP that low until October or so.  Still glad to be getting out of here.  Next week will be all about moving.  ugh.

nothing - I closed on the house yesterday and slept on the floor with a pile of dirty clothes as a pillow.  not much sleep.  Just a couple more days of living like a savage, then up to Oklahoma to finish getting the house ready for the renters and supervise the movers.
